The shingles rarely leak. The flashing does.
Flashing is the metal at the roof's weak points: valleys where two planes meet, walls and dormers, skylights and chimneys. When it rusts, loosens or was installed badly to begin with, water gets in while the shingles around it still look fine.
That is why a leak is so often not where you would expect. One homeowner had drywall coming down from his garage ceiling. The source was a dead valley where a vertical wall meets a steep 12/12 pitch.

Where flashing fails on Northwest Arkansas roofs
Valleys carry the highest water volume on the roof. At wall and dormer intersections, step flashing corrodes or was never layered properly under the siding.
Skylights leak when the original flashing kit was not installed correctly. Chimneys are their own case, with a dedicated page, because masonry and shingles move differently.
We check every one of these as a standard part of a roof inspection, since a flashing problem found early is a repair and one found late is an interior.
Chapter 03
Tear up and rebuild, or caulk over it
We reseal, refasten or fully replace flashing depending on its condition. On a failed valley or wall, the right repair is to tear up the surrounding shingles, lay ZIP tape, install ice and water shield, and reshingle properly.
Caulk is a patch, and silicone smeared over an old joint hides the problem until the next hard rain. The caulk version costs less on the day and more a few months later.
